Subject:
Europeana Connector aims at aggregating cultural heritage content and making it available through Europeana, supporting the access of cultural institutions into Europeana. The project will encourage the use of standard tools, protocols and practices to foster content aggregation into Europeana, adapting contents coming from local Digital Libraries, born and developed during time starting from different cultures, practices, standards and technologies. In order to do so we think it is important to address issues related to legal setting of data to be published into Europeana, to adopt standards and promote the use of existing best practices. Being the contents relevant for a broad public it is important to make access to digital contents collected in Europeana easy and straightforward. Cybersar is a consortium focused on supercomputing, computational modeling and management of large databases whose members are Italian universities, Research Centers and private enterprises. Cybersar has the know-how and hardware/software resources to create an IT platform able to collect and catalogue digital materials following qualitative and technical standards, and state of the art best practices. In all our projects, particular attention is given to planning phase and system usability. Granting accessibility in our web applications to all users and in particular to users with disabilities is the focal point. Moreover we design IT architectures considering both functional and non functional requirements, always considering performance, security and availability issues. We develop strategies, technologies and products to leverage on users activities and user generated content, on their social networks dynamics, on their cognitive, cultural and educational interests, by which we can further enrich content and extend actual solution's value. Cybersar is a Partner of E-Pistemetec Project, through which we are contributing to realize a new Digital Library under the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Italy-France Maritime. The project aim is to study, exploit and disseminate, through the use of leading-edge ICT, the scientific technical and natural Heritage of the Middle and Upper Tyrrhenian Sea. E-Pistemetec Digital Library was conceived to explore the potentiality of recreational approaches to scientific and cultural divulgation through ICT technologies. Engaging paths allow users to experiment new ways to foster cultural exchanges. These approaches go beyond the usual browsing techniques and make it possible to add one's own contents to highlight main features and peculiarities of the observed objects, allowing several levels of interactions in group debates. University of Cagliari, a Partner of the Cybersar Consortium, has developed different skills in the field of digital libraries. In particular through contributions, under P.I.C. Interreg IIIA and Interreg IIIB Medocc, to the study and digitalization of Meditheranean scientific and historical heritage documents, e.g. the ARISTHOT project http://www.aristhot.eu/ (see also http://www.e-corpus.org/) and the digital library SARDOA: Science and Sardinia.

Proposal Outline:
The scope of the proposal is to define a common connector to allow Digital contents owners to be able to publish their collections into Europeana without too much effort. Therefore we propose to realize an IT platform, where Partners are enabled to use unified standard and technologies to let digital contents be accessed though Europeana in respect of all legal concerns and within a clear license framework. The necessary activities are: create a IT and legal competence center to define content aggregation policies and practices study BPN (best practice network) content repositories IT and legal setting in order to asses: IT infrastructure, technology and interoperability capabilities deployed copyright issues and orientation copyright management policies and processes create a suitable middleware capable to work as connector and adapter between existing content repositories and Europeana, granting to Europeana the following features: interoperability standards adoption metadata harvesting standards adoption (OAI-PMH, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) web harvesting techniques implementation, to aggregate content from existing web site enriching them with metadata informations web resources aggregation (compound digital objects) using emerging standards (OAI-ORE, Open Archives Initiative Object Reuse and Exchange) mediate existing digital cultural content gathered from BPN partners' repositories offering a unified standard access to Europeana expose simple content and metadata through standard web services expose compound digital objects through standard web services expose metadata, for all mediated content, as a unified OAI-PMH Data Provider to Europeana expose content originally pubblished as web pages in the form of standardized digital objects, through web scraping/harvesting techniques expose copyright information about each managed content enrich mediated content using semantic technologies enrich mediated content harvesting user activities and social networks Europeana Connector will foster a broader convergence of digital contents into Europeana, promoting Europeana as the center of a vast constellation of Digital Libraries easily connected to it and coherent from a technological and legal point of view. Other activities are: Definition of scientific, cultural and historical heritage metadata to be included into Europeana. Alignment of metadata and mapping with the specifications of Europeana. Dissemination of project results We expect to be able to bring multilingual scientifical, cultural and historical metadata into Europeana. Europeana Connector will make it possible to users to utilize Europeana as an education instrument, being metadata organized to be easily managed by education institutions.
