Since the advent of service-oriented architectures (SOA) the idea of developing, finding and composing services to business processes has been chased. In a SOA, a certain repository should be established in order to collect all services to have them in one catalogue. This service repository should be a tool for process modelers (without having any knowledge of the underlying technology) to find and compose services according to their optimized process model.

Regarding Gartner’s Hype Cycle in 2009 the service-oriented architecture paradigm left the “Trough of Disillusionment” and is now about to reach the “Plateau of Productivity”. However, there are remaining challenges (i. e. required technical knowledge to understand, create, find and use services, missing data integration, etc.).

Another technological challenge is Cloud Computing with its different characteristics (i. e. private, public, hybrid cloud). High available and scalable infrastructures shed a new light on service-oriented architectures. Cloud platforms could merge several distributed services into one registry (PaaS) and scalable infrastructures could enable new business models (IaaS).

However previous “SOA problems” remain. Finding, using and combining suitable services in a very large “cloud repository” will require new technologies and techniques.

This is where (in our opinion) semantic technologies come into play. If services are mechanically understandable, they can automatically be found and composed to business processes. In addition to this, issues like security and benchmarking have to be taken into account as well.

Required skills and Expertise:

We are searching for national and international research partners/centers/institutes/corporations. The highly generic context addresses project partners of all industries and research facilities of all fields where business processes resp. their underlying services represent their core competency. According to the partners’ demands the generic context of this proposal can be adapted to domain specific requirements (e. g. CRM, ERP, etc.).

Partners that are able to provide cloud infrastructures (public/private/hybrid).
Partners that are looking forward to introducing service-oriented architectures (in the cloud).
Partners that already work in service-oriented contexts (i. e. service provider) and want to enrich their services with state-of-the-art semantic technologies.
