One Italian University and a Network of Italian SMEs seeks SMEs Partners for a Capacities Project to developt and ready-to-commercial production of a new technology for the mechanical recycling of not hazardous Autovehicle Shredded Residues (Car Fluff), with residuals from the selection process of plastic packaging products and shredded plastics from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) able to create new end-products or second-generation raw materials.


Proposal Outline:

RE-MI project, through the collaboration of RTD partners and European SMEs, aims at developing, engineering and effectively producing a technological prototype for the mechanical recycling of waste materials properly mixed such as:

Not hazardous Autovehicle Shredded Residues (ASR or known as “Car Fluff” CER 1910 04);
Residuals from the selection of recycling mixed plastic packaging waste.
Shredded plastics from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE);

In particular, the project aims at developing a technology and process able to enrich ASR with a percentage (at least 20%) of thermoplastic materials coming from the two other waste materials (residuals from selection of recycling plastic packaging waste and WEEE) in order to realize either end-products or second-generation raw materials to be devoted to a further production process. The three flows are quite important since they cover the major end-users of the plastic sector: in particular packaging remains the biggest plastics end-user at 37%, whilst Automotive and WEEE use 8 and 6% respectively.

The possibility of including in the mix CO2 microcells and an aesthetic skin, will highlight several advantages on the properties of the product: of course it will be possible to reduce its weight and defectiveness, and enhancing the safety (thanks to the use of CO2, an self-extinguish expanding gas), but also more aesthetic (and cheap) possibilities for product designers (thank to the use of an aesthetic skin).

On the viewpoint of manufacturing producers, this project will open several new product opportunities, in particular for all products realized in plastic material that, with a minimum width of at least 0,5 cm, do not require any very strict mechanical and/or thermal property, e.g, street or external furniture, or construction products (tiles, insulating covers, etc.).

This prototype will be accompanied by a thorough business plan in order to prove the effective project competitiveness for potential customers (e.g. recyclers) that would be interested in acquiring the technology. Within the business plan, market analyses, material flow analyses (to identify the quantities of material that could be effectively gathered/collected), scenario and sensitivity analyses will be performed, in order to evaluate the effective business opportunities coming from the adoption of the new technology that will be developed and prototypically produced in the RE-MI project. This particular mix of technology development and business analyses in the RE-MI project represents the best option to prove the real competitiveness of the prototype that will be realized, that thus would be ready to be successfully deployed on large-scale and produced for the market.

Considering the advantages for the European industry, firstly, the RE-MI project would lead to the production a new technology able to fully recycle some kind of wastes, that, at the moment, are either simply disposed or used as fuel for energy recovery, thus opening a new path for a full sustainability of the plastic process chain. And secondly, it would potentially drive the development of a new business, since it will explore the effective opportunities for European Recyclers and evaluate the business competitiveness of the new technology: in this view, there will be not developed just a new technology, but a proven successful technology ready to be deployed in the market on large-scale. Moreover, through a consistent activity of dissemination of the project results in Europe, the innovative technology will represent a best-practice to be adopted in other European regions.
